Overview The MKE 600 from Sennheiser is a shotgun microphone designed for use with a camcorder or video DSLR. Building on the company's extensive expertise in designing shotgun microphones, it is able to take on even the toughest video sound challenges, while still being compact and short relative to previous models. With its high level of directivity, the microphone focuses on the sounds in front of the camera, while attenuating unwanted sound coming from the sides and rear. It comes with an Auray DUSM-1 Universal Shockmount features a four-point suspension to accommodate shotgun and other cylindrical microphones measuring 0.74-0.98" (19-25mm) in diameter. Also with an Auray WSS Series Professional Windshields deliver superior 360° wind protection with acoustic transparency. I find the Sennheiser MKE 600 works well as either an on-camera mic, or mounted on a boom pole. The on-off switch has a nice tactile feel - you can tell when it has been moved. The construction seems solid, good enough for run-and-gun shooting or the rigors of on-set or on-location boom use. It may not be obvious, but the mic comes with its own mount and foam wind screen, although I'm glad to have the other items in this kit for the additional utility / capability they provide. Once nice feature of this mic is that the power LED has different behaviors to indicate battery power level: lights up red for approx. 1 second and after switch-on and then goes off to indicate a good amount of juice in the battery. It stays on red when the battery level is getting low. So that is helpful. The Auray Universal Shock mount is pretty good - the rubber mic-holder part seems robust enough - better than a cheap-ish rubber band. It is removable / replaceable if it should ever break. The attachment part has a cold-shoe plate, and also has 3/8 thread, so it will mount to a boom pole with male 3/8 screw. There is also an adjustment knob on the side to allow mic position to be pointed in desired direction - just shy of 180 degrees of travel. The wind-shield seems fine too, although haven't tested it much. It has a good firm grip quality - seems to stay in place, but is easy enough to remove. Overall I'm pleased with this kit.
